Matzke Fine Art Gallery & Sculpture Park: 2345 Blanche Way, Camano Island, WA

August Lilies, 30×40, Acrylic on Canvas

I am excited to announce that several of my lily paintings will be showing through August 23rd at Matzke Fine Art Gallery The current summer show, “The Northwest Connection,” opens on July 18th from 4:30-7:30. Please join me for this exciting opening and meet curator and owner, Karla Matzke. Enjoy food and wine as you browse paintings and sculptures by artists, including Lori Vanderhorst, Andy Eccleshall,Teresa Smith, Donna Watson, and Anne Martin McCool.

The Northwest Connection’s public opening is a great time to meet the artists, view and purchase art, and in this case, wander through the serene sculpture park on beautifully forested land. My daughter and grandson joined me for the adventure south to Camano Island, an hour drive from Bellingham, to deliver my paintings. We spent time with the impressives sulptures surrounding the gallery as well as sharing stories with the galleries’ generous owner, Karla Matkze.

I have been painting water lilies and reflections on water for the past fifteen years. I walk daily past Scudder Pond in Whatcom Falls Park near Lake Whatcom. The Audubon Bird Sanctuary supports sunning turtles, reed-thick islands, geese and ducks setting on eggs in the spring, and Great Blue Herons fishing. And, occasionally, beaver sightings. There are always red winged blackbirds calling, along with the chirping frogs in the spring: the pond is a gem.

Also, if you are out and about in Bellingham, please stop by Voxel Gallery, 312 W Champion St., and take in Christine Biernacki’s beautifully curated show titled, WET…everything about water. I have two colorful paintings in this show and one drawing of a mussel shell and barnacles. The show runs through August 15th.

Silver Falls Reflection, 40×30, Nancy Canyon

“My personal style has developed around natural images, the quality of light, and closeups in nature. I love capturing the detailed layers, spirals, unnamable colors, glittering reflections, and wavering shadows in acrylic paint on Canvas. As my fascination of the healing power of art, I studied art therapy at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon, earning my BA in Interdisciplinary Studies—art and psychology. Later, I studied writing at PLU and earned the MFA in Creative Writing (fiction and poetry).

“When I am not painting or writing, I teach writing and art journaling in my studio in the Morgan Block Building, Historic Fairhaven. I also work as a writing coach, helping authors write their memoirs. I have authored three books: Stuck: A Season on a Fire Lookout (memoir); Celia’s Heaven (novel), and Saltwater (poetry).
